Simply download the iPhone or Android app, sync the padlock to your phone and you’re ready to roll! Next time you need your gear from that old storage around the corner, just open the app, hit the unlock button, grab your stuff, hit the lock button and that’s it! No need to remember where the key is!
Our homes are getting smarter and smarter everyday! Cool gadgets such as the NEEO Smart Remote, the Goji Smart Remote, the Peq Smart Home Sensor and many others hit the market everyday and use the latest technologies combined with fast internet connections to allow you better monitor, control and interact with your home.
The Withings Home is another such cool gadget designed to allow you better interact with your house and increase your overall comfort. The Withings Home is a features a wide angle 135-degree 5MP HD camera with night vision which allows you to constantly video monitor what’s happening in your home, a 2w high quality speaker and 2 digital microphones, noise and motion detectors which allow the camera to record footage only when something it’s happening in the room, an air quality analyzer which, matched with an iPhone or Android app, can analyze and track the quality of the air inside your house as well as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity for fast wireless and cable data transfers.
Just as the iFingerLock biometric padlock we featured earlier, the Fuz Design Noke Padlock is designed to overcome classic padlock problems such as losing the keys or forgetting the opening combinations.
The Noke padlock connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and, via free iPhone and Android apps allows easy setup and operation. You can setup multiple smartphones to open a Noke, you can share access with other users, you can check usage history and easily unlock the padlock without even pulling the phone from your pocket.
The Noke padlock has a built-in battery which lasts up to a year of usage and, if you run out of battery or if you don’t have your phone with you, it can be operated by simply tapping the hinge (just as classic Morse code) and entering a quick click code previously set up.
The Noke Padlock is in project mode at Kickstarter and you reserve one for $59 (that’s about $30 less than what it would retail for). The project already reached it’s funding cap 9meaning that the Noke will be produced and released to the market) and the delivery is scheduled for February 2015.
With so much data floating around, backups are no longer a luxury, but a must! Think about all those pics from your smartphone, all those videos with your kids, documents, contacts, personal files, music and the list goes on and on … I am not going to stress more the data backup importance, because I know you do it! Don’t you?
On the other hand I am going to speak about the safety of your backups! Let me start with a little story – a friend of mine, a real geek, used to keep not 1, not 2, but 3 backup sets for all his data (including his smartphone, tablet and his home and work laptops). One day, the inevitable happened, and his apartment got flooded by the neighbor above. He called the guy, they stopped the flood and the neighbor helped him clean the apartment. All good until now. This is when the disaster happened! He opened his laptop but it was not working. It was full of water. He grabbed his girlfriend’s laptop which was not water damaged, he opened his desk to grab one of his backup HDD’s to copy some files and … Surprise! As all three of his backup HDD’s were on the lowest shelf of his desk, they were all water damaged!
So here you have a geeky guy who knew the importance of backups, with 1 set of original data and 3 sets of backups who lost all his digital life because the neighbor in the apartment above! Imagine that!
The good news is that in the end he was able to recover most of his data from the damaged HDD’s! The bad news is that this could happen to anyone, including you!
All this to say that backups are not enough to protect your data. You should also take steps to protect your backup drives from thieves and the elements! You can do this the hard way (as I do it) by using two encrypted HDD’s and always having one at a remote location (work, a friend, family member) or the simple way, by using disaster proof hard drives!
The ioSafe rugged portable 1TB external hard drive is one of the top disaster proof HDD‘s out there! The drive works on MAC and PC (USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt) features a full metal jacket that protects it against the elements, crushes and drops. The HDD mechanism inside the metal jacket is fully suspended in all 6 motion axes, so it will survives extreme shocks under most circumstances. The HDD is rated to with crush protection up to 5,000 lbs (2,267 KG), drop protection up to 20′ (that’s 6 meters), 30′ (9.15 meters) deep submersion in salty/fresh water for up to 3 days, full immersion in various liquids including diesel, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, continuous exposure to UV, blowing sand, blowing dust, rain, salt fog, icing or freezing rain. All this without loosing not even one byte of data!
Regarding the anti theft protection, the ioSafe PA51000U3YR features a solid Kensington Lock compatible slot which should be enough to discourage a dishonest person as well as a theft protection software which allows full drive AES encryption.
That’s the good part about it! The bad part is that this ioSafe beast comes with a premium price of $600! Well … you probably see it as premium because you didn’t hit the floor yet, but, if you already lost your data once, you know it’s a real bargain!!! Check it out and let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I am curious to see how do you manage your backup drives …
Working in today’s world implies (most times) carrying gear back and forth between your home and your office. And this is not an easy job … laptop, tablet, mouse and cables, chargers, headphones, paper files and who knows what else … gear packs up and gets more and more difficult to carry around.
The Case Logic 15.6-in Laptop & Tablet Backpack is designed around this issue and offers a convenient solution for storing and carrying your gear while you roam around. The backpack sports a laptop and tablet dedicated compartment padded for anti-shock protection and a middle compartment designed around carrying more bulky items like books, laptop chargers, umbrellas, some light clothing or paper files. Other than these two main compartments, we find a handful of other useful smaller pockets such us: a top loading pocket with plush lining for smartphones, 2 side pockets (one sports an incorporated key ring to secure your keys, the other one has a headphones thread designated slot for easy music listening), a lumbar anti-smuggler pocket designed to keep your most precious gear away of prying eyes, a top-front pocket for small gear you need handy at any moment (thing about pens, USB drives, external HDD, etc …) and a front larger pocket which can easily hold a newspaper, sunglasses case or a smaller umbrella.
The backpack features lumbar padding for comfortable transport, the thick foam back padding with breathable mesh is designed to allow a constant air flow for increased comfort, a secondary front bottom handle allows easy grip in case of carrying heavy gear, an adjustable sternum strap secures the backpack while the padded shoulder straps provide comfort while carrying the backpack for longer periods of time.
I used this backpack for around 1 month and I am pretty impressed with it’s quality and storage capabilities (check the attached video to have an idea how much I fit in it and there was still plenty of room available for other gear). Before using it I was never a big fan of laptop backpacks and I always preferred classic laptop cases such as this one or this one. Well, this Case Logic backpack changed my opinion and became pretty quickly my preferred laptop bag. Check it out …
Tired of loosing padlock keys and forgetting security codes? The iFingerLock Biometric Padlock might be the last padlock you’ll ever purchase … that’s if you don’t loose any of your fingers, of course!
The iFingerLock is able to store 10 fingerprints so you can easily share the lock with other users, allows temporary access granting (very useful in case when employees or guests need to have access to the secured space) and is powered by two AAA batteries. Fear not, the padlock remembers the fingerprints even if the batteries are out of power.
Each padlock comes with it’s own matching USB drive used to securely manage passwords. For security reasons, no PC is needed for the biometric setup or fingerprint management.
Being able to protect your gear while on the go it’s something you should constantly be worried about.
While a dedicated anti-theft solution as the Camsafe 100 can bring you some piece of mind if you want to safely transport your DSLR, what happens with bigger messenger bags and backpacks?
PacSafe, the “world’s leading travel security brand”, brings an interesting solution on the table – The PacSafe BackPack and Bag Protector. The bag protector is basically an exomesh cage system that keeps your goods away of thieves. Put your bag inside the metallic mesh, close it, attach it to a secure fixture with the included padlock and you’re ready to go.
While the system is not 100% infallible and someone with the right equipment (read cable cutters) can manage his way to your gear, it is a good solution when traveling for the simple fact that it makes it difficult for thieves to snap your bag and run. Why battle with the protective mesh and risk to be caught when there are so many other “free-to-grab” bags out-there???
